Horace Thompson Woodward, age 97 of Mendenhall, PA died Saturday February 18, 2006 at Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Township. He was the husband of the late Ellen H. Woodward who died in 1989, with whom he shared over 30 years of marriage.
Born September 12, 1908 on the family farm, where he lived until recently, he was the son of the late Norris Hewes and Mary Thompson Woodward.
Horace attended the one room Greenwood School for 4 years before going by train to the Kennett Schools. He graduated in 1926 after which he took a 2 year course at Penn State in agriculture majoring in Dairy and Orchard Management. Upon graduating from Penn State, he returned home to farm with his father and brother until 1988, when they sold the farm. The family sold produce at the Wilmington Farmers Market for 80 years. He was very active in Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mendenhall. He was also active in the Kennett Area Senior Center. He was a member of the Centre Grange #11 Patrons of Husbandry for over 80 years, and of the Centerville Lodge #37 Independent Order of Odd Fellows for over 73 years. He enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, trap shooting and most especially telling jokes. He traveled with his wife on several Winterthur trips to Europe visiting various museums. Horace was a long time fan and supporter of the Pennsylvania State University. His keen memory served family and local historians well. Family members and acquaintances alike will long remember the twinkle in his eye when he was about to share a joke or riddle with an unsuspecting listener. Survivors include three nieces, as well as one grandniece and four grandnephews. He was predeceased by a brother J. Robert Woodward and a sister Elizabeth W. Wood. A memorial service will be held 2 PM Sunday February 26, 2006 at the Bethany Presbyterian Church Rt. 52, in Mendenhall, PA 19357. Friends and family may call from 1-2PM before the service. Interment will be private. A reception will follow in the church hall. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Bethany Presbyterian Church P.O. Box 17 Mendenhall, PA 19357.
